Hip pain is one of the commonest problems our podiatrists and physiotherapist treat at Hip To Toe. Misaligned feet lead to misaligned knees which lead to misaligned hips.

When the feet, knees and hips are misaligned it can lead to uneven wear and tear in the hip socket which leads to arthritic change and pain.

Our podiatry and physiotherapy treatment realigns the feet, knees and hips to help reduce your pain.

Combined with podiatry and physiotherapy exercises we have many clients that have avoided hip surgery.

If your goal is to avoid hip surgery our Gold Coast podiatry clinic in Arundel can help.

In order to stop the pain, first we need to know where it is coming from.If the problem is coming from misaligned joints, x-rays will identify which joints are out of alignment.

Our podiatry and physiotherapy treatment gently moves the joints into different positions without using orthotics. We combine this with podiatry and physiotherapy exercises to hold the joints in the new positions.

The Hip Structure

Hip pain Gold CoastThe Hip is a ball and socket joint.

This means it is designed to move in all directions to allow the leg to adapt to the terrain that we are walking on.

To be able to sit, squat, kneel and stand, requires the ball and socket to move smoothly.

If the hip is not able to move smoothly this can lead to an inefficient walking style, compensation and pain.

And these are the x-rays of the feet

The x-rays show:
  • The left foot has significantly different angles than the right foot
  • The arch has dropped on both feet
  • There are bunions on both feet
  • There are spurs on the hips
  • There is severe arthritis of the hips
  • Both hips have been replaced

The misalignment led to years of uneven wear and tear, which resulted in the hip replacements.

Even after the replacements this lady was still in a lot of hip pain because the underlying cause of the problem had not been treated.

At Hip To Toe our podiatrists and physiotherapists treated the cause, the misaligned feet, knees and hips in order to improve movement, and reduce the hip pain.

Our podiatry treatment meant there was no further hip surgery and no orthotics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Do You Do?

We work to get people out of pain, out of orthotics and keep them away from surgery.

We realign subluxed joints in the foot and lower limb with a system known as MME (Mobilisations, Manipulations and Exercises).

The Mobilisations and Manipulations (which are called adjustments) are done in clinic by your structural practitioner. The corrective exercises are done by the client at home.

How Many Adjustments Will I Need?

Every client is different and everyone will respond differently to treatment.

Some clients come to me after being in pain for 50 years, while other clients come after being in pain for only a couple of weeks.

These are just a few of the many factors that will influence how you respond to treatment:

  • the amount of time you have been in pain
  • the different treatments you have tried
  • the nature of your work
  • the sports you participate in
  • your home and family life

How Long Before The Pain Stops?

Some clients are pain-free within a few adjustments and for other clients it is a gradual improvement over time.

Clients that get the best results are those who do all of their corrective exercises as prescribed.

By doing your prescribed exercises you will give your body the best chance to heal, which will reduce the pain.

Do I Have To Keep Doing Adjustments After The Pain Stops?

Pain is the body’s way of indicating something is wrong. Pain usually comes after damage has been occurring for a long time.

Rather than only treating pain, it makes more sense to ensure the joints are always the best they can be so that you can participate in your activities without pain.

It is the same as going to your dentist for a check-up or taking your car to a mechanic for a service. It is always better to do maintenance.

After I have realigned the joints I work out a maintenance pathway to ensure you are able to carry on with your activities to the best of your abilities and pain free.

Do You Treat Everyone The Same?

Everyone is different. They have different problems, symptoms, and subluxations.

Each client is treated individually. They are given different adjustments, and their exercise program is specifically tailored for them.

By carrying out a treatment regime of MME (Mobilisation, Manipulation, and Exercises) we are able to realign the joints in the feet and lower limb, which in time can reduce the symptoms.

Why Has No One Told Me This Before?

This is probably the question I get asked most frequently.

There are a number of reasons why no one has told you this before. Depending on who you see, will determine the information you receive.

Most practitioners treat the pain people come in with rather than looking for the underlying cause. So if you go to a practitioner seeking relief from your knee pain or hip pain then they will usually investigate the knee or hip, without looking at the feet.

GPs know about a vast number of things, but they cannot specialise in all of them. GPs do not understand the structure of the lower limb in the way that a structural podiatrist does. However, GP’s usually refer their patients to other practitioners who can help them.

By visiting a practitioner who understands the need to look for the root cause of the problem you give yourself the best chance of success.

Can You Treat Me Even At My Age?

I treat all ages from 5 to 85. However, the way I treat a 5 year old is very different to the way I treat an 85 year old.

Can I Get Freedom From Orthotics?

Many of my clients come to me after they have been fitted for orthotics that do not work.

By treating the cause of the problems, and realigning the joints in the feet, it is possible to get people out of orthotics completely.

Why Don’t You Use Orthotics?

An orthotic is an external device.

Instead of using an external device to realign the feet, we realign the joints internally through MME (mobilisation, manipulation, and exercises).

My Whole Family Has Bunions, Will I Get Them?

While we do inherit our parents genetics that does not mean we will inherit their bunions.

Bunions are a structural problem caused by the big toe being unable to move up and down properly.

Rather than resigning yourself to the idea that you will get bunions, it makes more sense to get your alignment checked by a structural podiatrist who can realign the joints and get the big toe to function better.
