HIP PAIN ASSESSMENT & MANAGEMENT

Hip pain is one of the most common problems our podiatrists and physiotherapists treat at Hip To Toe. Foot, knee, hip, and movement mechanics may all contribute to hip pain depending on the individual.

When the feet, knees and hips are misaligned, it can lead to uneven wear and tear in the hip socket, and this eventually leads to arthritic change and pain.

Our podiatry and physiotherapy team assess lower limb mechanics and movement patterns to develop treatment plans aimed at improving function and reducing discomfort.

In some cases, conservative treatment may help delay or reduce the need for more invasive interventions.

If you are experiencing hip pain, our team can assess your condition and discuss appropriate treatment options.

HOW TO STOP HIP PAIN?

In order to stop your hip pain, we first need to accurately diagnose the cause of where your pain is coming from. If the problem is coming from misaligned joints, x-rays are the best way to identify which joints are out of alignment.

Our podiatry and physiotherapy treatment aims to gently improve joint mobility and movement mechanics, with treatment recommendations tailored to your individual needs. We combine this with podiatry and physiotherapy exercises to hold your joints in their newly realigned position.

The Hip Structure

Hip pain Gold CoastThe Hip is a ball and socket joint.

This means it is designed to move in all directions to allow the leg to adapt to the terrain that we are walking or running on.

To be able to sit, squat, kneel and stand requires the ball and socket to move smoothly.

If the hip is not able to move smoothly, it can lead to an inefficient walking style, compensation, and pain.

What causes misaligned hips?

MISALIGNED FEET LEAD TO MISALIGNED HIPS

These are the x-rays of the hips of a 41 year old female who had both hip joints replaced:

The x-rays show:

  • The left foot has significantly different angles than the right foot
  • The arch has dropped on both feet
  • There are bunions on both feet
  • There are spurs on the hips
  • There is severe arthritis of the hips
  • Both hips have been replaced

The misalignment led to years of uneven wear and tear, which resulted in the hips needing replacement.

Even after her hip replacements, this lady was still in a lot of pain. This is because the contributing factors to the problem had not been addressed

At Hip To Toe, our podiatrists and physiotherapists treated the cause (the misaligned feet, knees and hips) and not just the symptoms in order to improve movement and reduce your pain.

Our podiatry treatment meant her treatment plan was adjusted based on her ongoing clinical needs
